Health Economics Research with R

The Modular Course on Health Economics Research with R was held in March 2025 at Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel, jointly organized by Kathmandu University, the Nepal Health Economics Association, and the University of Bergen. This was a follow-up training offered after the previous module on health economics research, with a particular focus on health economics data analysis using R in health economics research. Sessions covered essential topics such as introduction to R programming, data visualization, data manipulation, randomized controlled trials in health economics, methods of obtaining and analyzing household consumption data, and step-by-step training on economic evaluations in R. The course also emphasized critical appraisal of research, publication ethics, and manuscript preparation to strengthen participants' research capacity. Through interactive lectures, hands-on exercises, and group work, the course helped build technical expertise and foster a new generation of health economics researchers in Nepal.

The fellowship also includes an Experiential Learning Project (ELP), designed to offer practical, problem-based learning experiences that complement the theoretical coursework. Each participant will have an individual mentor who will continuously guide the course participants in the ELP. The steering committee in MoHP will provide insights into the ELP to course participants and explore the uptake of evidence generated in the decision-making process.

Training Program Details

Nepal Health Economics Association (NHEA), in collaboration with the University of Michigan, successfully hosted the Global StatCore In-Person Training on May 19–20, 2025, at the Nepal Eye Hospital Auditorium, Tripureshwor, Kathmandu.

The two-day intensive workshop, titled 'Building Your Biostatistics Toolbox', was facilitated by Prof. Mousumi Banerjee of the University of Michigan, with a pre-course video primer by Prof. Roderick J. A. Little, and brought together 20 early- and mid-career health researchers and economists from across Nepal.

Participants engaged in hands-on sessions covering linear regression, model selection, confounding and effect modification, diagnostics, handling multicollinearity, outliers and missing data, as well as logistic regression theory, interpretation, model fit, ROC curves, and prediction. The training enhanced statistical analysis skills and strengthened collaboration between NHEA and international academic institutions, with certificates of participation awarded at the conclusion of the program.
